![]() ![]() At first I thought "browsing" was some lesser form of "shopping" in that we could look but not touch. My neighbor had Prodigy, which had web browsing a bit earlier. I mean holy gently caress, 3.0 wasn't long after 2.5, which IIRC was when AOL first supported the "world wide web". It's absolutely ridiculous that AOL 3.0 was even compatible with their backend network in 2016. Here's the message AOL was sending out last year to people using 3.0 through 5.0:Ĭhumbawumba4ever97 has a new favorite as of 00:06 on Apr 10, 2016 ![]() I was trying to see if I could spoof it to think 3.0 is version 6.0 so I could access a lot more keywords. I tried editing the EXE with a hex editing program but there was no mention of the version number in there. I wonder why now? How many users could still possibly be on a version from the 90s? It really is strange that they started blocking 3.0 to 5.0 just this past year. If you even click "Guest" and then sign on, it immediately boots you off and says "Version no longer supported". It doesn't even let you get to the screen where you put your username and password in. It rejects you as soon as you click "Sign On". Someone was watching the logs and noticed your activities, didn't they? I asked if I could look up scary stories on it, she helped me find some, but one of the first results was a page of user stories and instructions for how to craft pipe bombs, napalm, among other things. I was staying at a family friend's house for the evening, and she had the internet on her computer. I just remembered an internet encounter I had sometime in the mid 90s, when I was 8 or 9 years old. Please disregard my advice w/r/t history. A lot of things I click on give me an error like "you do not have access to this area" or some other bland error, but a decent amount of stuff is surprisingly working.Įdit: this is such a fuckin blast from the past but in realtimeĪwesome post. I am trying to get around stuff via other "links". Unfortunately again I cannot simply just go to keyword "gamepro" I have to find its AOL URL link thing for it to work. Not sure why they would not have just removed it or whatever.Īnyway if anyone has any requests for me to try stuff just ask. A lot of stuff makes mention of upcoming dates which is weird because they are dates 18 years in the past. Most are not loading and many times they freeze the software, but the stuff I have been able to pull up today has been fascinating.Īgain these are remnants that are still on there today (barely). Through lots of effort and trickery, I am getting some AOL keywords to work (though just typing a keyword name in and going to it does not work I have to do this strange method of going to keyword aol:\\9349 for example to find stuff) ![]()
